Just when you thought the storm was over a new storm cloud ushered in; or is it?
Let see, we have been through COVID-19 ( more commonly know as C-Time these days), interest rate hikes, inflation, housing crisis, wars, incompetent government, supply chain issues, political upheaval, immigration concerns, and unprecedented protests. Just about everything except the ‘Four Horseman” and locusts in the last 5 years. Then along comes Uncle Donald preaching the old language of protectionism and nationalism, better described as Tariffs.
But wait, are Tariffs new? No. Are they effective? No. Are they political? Almost certain. Should we be concerned to the point of panic? Absolutely not.
Tariffs have been around for a long time. It is nothing more than a government’s way to covertly tax other countries. Who benefits from tariffs? The government, of course. Not the manufacturer, not the wholesaler, and certainly not the consumer. The government collects the tariffs and says thank you very much to other country for paying it. It is analogous to a cover charge at your local watering hole. You want to come in? Then pay us.
It is the cost of doing business in the biggest market in the entire world. Pay the ticket for your access. I would suggest you are far better off to eat at this restaurant in the long run. Besides, you’ve been too busy and or too lazy to source out somewhere new to eat. So, take your lumps, pay your entrance fee, and make slightly less money on every widget you sell. Worth it.
As long as the Sellers of goods do the right thing, pay for their meal, and don’t ask us to pick up the tab, then there is nothing to worry about. Besides, haven’t we been through enough?
